Scandinavia, particularly Sweden, is renowned in the coffee industry for its high coffee consumption per capita. This also means that Sweden boasts one of the largest coffee roasting industries in the region. Coupled with a strong coffee culture and a keen interest in transparency and ethically sourced raw materials, Sweden offers enticing characteristics for starting a coffee business.
While Scandinavian countries may import less green coffee due to their smaller populations, Nordic consumers have a preference for high-quality arabicas and the means to invest in premium products.
Sweden stands out for its robust coffee culture, characterized by daily coffee breaks known as "fika". However, despite this tradition, the end product consumed by many Swedes often falls short of a great cup of coffee. So, why is this the case? Is it due to the lack of a strong coffee culture? Do people have greater resources to acquire high-quality roasted coffee? And do they prioritize sourcing, transparency, and supporting those involved in the production chain?
Well, I don't have a definitive answer to these questions, but I can speculate about the various factors involved. To begin, coffee, as a cultural beverage that brings families and communities together to share stories and time, is often remembered as a plain, bitter, and energy-boosting drink. This perception becomes evident when people try one of our coffees and remark, "Oh, it's not bitter..." This experience often opens up a new way of seeing coffee for many individuals. Nevertheless, coffee remains deeply connected to childhood memories of home or other related experiences.
This disconnect may also stem from a lack of awareness that coffee can offer more to your sensory experience than just bitterness and caffeine. It's about being conscious of what you consume at any given time. Sometimes we overlook this aspect amidst our daily sensory experiences, whether it's during lunch, dessert, tea, or even coffee, the most consumed beverage in a Swedish office.
